Historical Background.

The first stadium was built on this site in 1924-1925, according to the project of Czech Alois Veyvoda, a former football player of the "Sport" team. The first match was played on July 5, 1925 (Leningrad 5:1 Kharkiv). Only in 1933 were repairs carried out, the curves of the concrete path removed, wooden stands built, and the capacity of the stands increased from 10,000 to 25,000. On this occasion, July 14, 1933, the USSR national team for the first time in history took the field of the Lenin Stadium. The match between the first and second representatives of the USSR ended with the victory of the second team with a score of 2:0. Two weeks later, the stadium hosted the first international match in which the Leningrad team met with the Turkish team (2:2).

During the Great Patriotic War, the stadium was destroyed. Some of the wooden stands were burnt, others were dismantled by the townspeople for firewood in the harsh winter of 1942. However, the stone bowl of the stadium was saved, and in 1957-1961 the stadium was restored according to the projects of architects N.V. Baranov, O.I. Guryev and V.M. Fromzel. After completion, the new stadium had a capacity of 33,000. Thanks to the artificial track "Novoton" stadium became one of the athletics centers of the country: In 1968, the first memory of the Znamensky brothers was established, and in July 1970 competitions in athletics of the USSR-USSR were organized. In addition to track and field, from the 1960s to the 1980s, the Lenin Stadium hosted matches of the national championship in rugby, bandy and hockey. In the late 1970s, before the Olympic Games in 1980, the stadium was reconstructed (architects S.P. Odnovalov, N.D. Balaji, engineer M.E. Christiansen).

In 1992, the stadium was renamed Petrovsky Stadium, in 1994 it was reconstructed for friendly matches. The following year, plastic seats were installed in the stands, and electric heaters were installed on the field. Since 1994, it is the home stadium of Zenit, and since 2017 it has been used as a reserve. After Zenit moved to a new stadium on Krestovsky Island (the youth team also left this small arena), and there were no other football clubs left in the city, the continued use of the arena, which was transferred to the municipal ownership, was in question. The possibility of converting the stadium into an athletics arena has reportedly not received a positive response from officials, citing the fact that it is unprofitable. The demolition of the stadium and the use of the site for the construction of commercial housing were also considered.

Since 2019, the stadium is being prepared as a training ground for the teams participating in the European Football Championship 2020. The stadium is also being prepared for athletics. A treadmill was renovated, and a high jump pad, a long jump pit, and a barrier pit were built. Preparations are also under way for the assessment of the stadium's condition. In the future, it was planned to build a canopy over the spectator area. In June 2023, a reconstruction agreement was signed and the stadium was to be transformed into a modern cultural and sports complex with an adjacent multifunctional public space.
