White Mosque in Sherefdin
The White Mosque in Sherefdin is a mosque in Visoko, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is a very important building for the city and the Visoko region. The architect of the mosque was Zlatko Uglen, the master - Ismet Imamovich, and the contractor - Zviezda from Visoko. The first building was built in 1477, but was completely rebuilt and completed in 1980; in 1983 it was awarded the Aga Khan Award for Architecture.
The jury recognized the boldness, creativity, brilliance, originality and innovation of the mosque; in 2007, Hungarian architects recognized it as one of the three shrines of Europe with the best design.
Plan, structure and materials
The mosque consists of five functional areas:
* entrance area and first courtyard
*Main building of the mosque
* additional part
* Cemetery
* Minaret.
The central part of the mosque is used for worship and other religious events such as lectures and discussions. The indoor space used for worship is an annex building. The annex consists of a small auditorium and office. Traditionally, in Bosnian mosques, the cemetery acts as a buffer between the mosque and other buildings, but in this case the cemetery is isolated. Architect Zlatko Uglen has adopted the traditional layout of Bosnian mosques. The courtyard leads to a square prayer hall with a dome rising above it. The distinctive feature is the unusual location of the concept, with large glass panels that further integrate the mosque with the rest of the building. The five roof windows symbolize the five founding principles of Islam, while shining a light on important parts of the interior. The southeastern facade of the dome is oriented towards the Kaaba. The fountain, minbar and other decorations are simple, as are simple and legible interior lines. Both inside and outside the mosque are painted white, beige on the floor, green on metal details such as the frame and pipes.
