About This Mod
NS 6400
This locomotive was conceived by Nederlandse Spoorwegen in the 1980s as a replacement for the aging diesel locomotive fleet. Since most of the network had long been electrified, this locomotive could perform the combined task of maneuvering, collecting cargo and towing freight trains on the few non-electrified routes. After several ideas for a double cabin design, a slightly modified version of the existing Machinebau Kiel (MaK) diesel-electric was ordered. The locomotives served in the NS until the privatization of the cargo division gave the locomotives to NS cargo and, almost immediately thereafter, to Railion, which quickly took over the new company. Soon after, Railion itself merged into DB cargo, the current main user of the 6400 type still mainly in the Netherlands.
