locomotive worldwide: class Norfolk & Western J! Sorry it took a long time, I'm trying to redesign these locomotives, not just refurbish them.
Norfolk & Western J Class was one of the last issues of mainline streamlined conventional steam locomotives. Built in N&W's own workshops in 1941, they proved to be extremely powerful and capable of pulling the fastest N&W passenger trains (Pocahontas and Powhattan Arrow) on the short but mountainous highway from Norfolk to Cincinnati. Unlike most streamlined steam locomotives, the enclosure was not designed by a professional industrial designer - all of this was done by the common guys in Roanoke's workshops.
Diesel came late in the coal-rich N&W, and the J class was phased out only in 1958. Towards the end of their lives, they were on a wide variety of services, being powerful enough to pull long, slow coal trains and manifests.
The locomotive has undergone changes since TPF1, with updated textures, improved couplings, removable assets, and working clutch doors. Also included is a colorized version for all freaks who love multicolored trains.
