The GWR 4300 class featured 2-6-0 engines known as Moguls (from the American name for the wheel formula). Designed for passenger and freight transport, they used the existing wheelbase of Class 3100 tank engines and other standard parts. They turned out to be a very successful mixed traffic design. Between 1911 and 1932, 342 ships were built, of which 2 survived.
In 1932, Collett built the last batch of twenty 4300 class steam locomotives, which featured large cabins with side windows.
British Railways inherited 241 trains after nationalization in 1948. Half of them were withdrawn by 1960, and the last six were withdrawn in 1964.
