About This Mod
The EMD F45 is a diesel-electric engine with hood produced by General Motors Electro-Motive Division from 1968 to 1971. Power was supplied by the EMD 645E3's 20-cylinder 3,600 hp engine. After sponsoring the development of the FP45 passenger locomotive, Santa Fe requested a similar freight locomotive from the Electro-Motive. While the FP45 was a SDP45 wrapped in a full-width bonnet body, the new F45 was essentially an SD45 with the same handling.
While the Santa Fe required a full-width body for aesthetics, the Great Northern saw the opportunity to protect crews from the dangers of winter operations in the northern climate.
