About This Mod

Welcome to Heart of Darkness Mod! I've been creating this mod for months, totally dedicated to exploring it. I tried very hard to make it in such a way that it is as close as possible to the values of Paradox design. If you have any questions, bug reports or recommendations, please let me know!

Heart of Darkness is a expansion pack-style fashion for African countries in Liberia and Ethiopia (and for Italy if it loses to Ethiopia) with unique focus trees and events, as well as an updated historical list. Where historical facts (such as Liberian tanks) were not available, I went further and gave them plausible-sounding names.

Liberia

The small African Republic of Liberia stands alone in Africa as one of two independent African countries and the only black republic. Founded by America in the 1800s, Liberia has struggled from the outset with its indigenous populations, as well as with the British and French, who jealously watched over their lands. Only intervention by the United States kept this small republic. During the Great War, Liberia joined the Entente, but its economy was devastated as a result. Liberia has just begun to recover from this economic catastrophe, but politically it is still experiencing the consequences of an investigation by the League of Nations into the possible use of slaves on Liberian rubber plantations. Moreover, the US-liberal elite still rules despite constituting only a small percentage of the population, and Liberia’s hinterland remains largely beyond the government’s control. The Liberian border force, Liberia’s military, is thoroughly corrupt and ungovernable, and only recent US aid has helped to change that state. Liberia has a long way to go before it can be considered a success, but with abundant local resources, Liberia's future can be truly bright.

Abyssinia

Abyssinia is an anomaly in Africa, one of two free African countries, and, unlike Liberia, it is not an artificial country created by another. With a long and proud tradition, Abyssinia was able to maintain its independence through a combination of political maneuvering and military might. In 1896, the Italians lost the Battle of Adova and were forced to put an end to their Abyssinian ambitions. Emperor Haile Selassie I is a reformer who understands the importance of having a modern military and modern infrastructure. An opponent of the reactionary nobility, he implemented a series of reforms that enraged his opponents. This was to be a critical moment for Abyssinia, where Haile Selassie I was to reform and modernize the country, but the envious Italians, never forgetting their defeat in 1896, returned. In 1935, the Second Italo-Abyssinian War began. After an initial Italian onslaught, everything looked reassuring in December, when Ras Imru managed to bypass the Italians and head for Adi Kuala, the main supply point for the Italian army. Faced with imminent defeat, Italian Marshal Badoglio ordered the use of mustard gas as a desperate gambit. It worked, and war now depends on the next few battles. The odds are stacked against the Abyssinians, as the British and French impose an arms embargo, from which only Abyssinia suffers. More than 10,000 badly needed German guns were still confiscated, and no one else dared to challenge the British and French. Will Abyssinia be able to lead a second Adova?

Italy

The Second Italo-Abyssinian War causes most of the population to remain on edge, waiting for Mussolini to deliver on his promise of a short and easy victory. Many doubt him, and if the war drags on, calls for his removal from power may intensify.

Renewed small nations

This applies only to ideas from leaders/advisors, not to complete unique ideas/focus trees

Djibouti (DJI), Eritrea (ERI), Kenya (KEN), Somalia (SOM), Sudan (SUD), Zambia (ZAM), Malawi (MLW), Zimbabwe (ZIM).

SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGES:

In order to preserve the aesthetic of the game, I will not use photographs for portraits, as I feel that it always pulls me out. If you want to offer a portrait that fits into the art style of the game for any of the characters without a photo, I will gladly use it. Unfortunately, my art skills don’t go that far.

The map has been edited, this will probably make any other map mods incompatible with this one.

The mod has been checked on the version of the game: 1.11.1, 1.11.2, 1.11.3, 1.11.4, 1.11.5, 1.11.6, 1.11.7, 1.11.8, 1.11.9
