Angel Mounds - United States Map v1.0
For millennia, the territory that later became the eastern part of the United States was inhabited by indigenous people who settled near rivers and used them for movement and trade. The Mississippian culture, so named for its geographical origin in the Mississippi River basin and its tributaries, spread around 900 AD. This culture extended west to Oklahoma, north to present-day southwestern Illinois near St. Louis, Missouri, east to southeastern forests, present-day North Carolina, and south to present-day Mississippi.
The Angel Mounds National Historic Site represents Mississippian culture and covers more than 600 acres (240 ha) in Vanderburg and Warrick counties, Indiana, about 8 miles (13 km) southeast of present-day Evansville. Built and inhabited between 1100 and 1450 AD, the large residential and agricultural community served as the political, cultural and economic center of Angel chiefdom. It extended from the Ohio River basin to 120 miles (190 km) from the present-day Green River in Kentucky. At its peak, its walls were inhabited by up to 10,000 people, as well as 13 earthen fortresses, hundreds of residential complexes, palisades (castles) and other structures.
The Mississippi left Angel region long before European contact. Researchers speculate that this may have been due to environmental factors, such as prolonged regional droughts that led to a reduction in maize surplus, and the gradual depletion of natural resources that once allowed for the concentration of the population. In addition, people could overuse and consume wood for building and campfires, resulting in reduced forest cover.
