About This Mod

This is the announcement of the sale of the Alfa Sud sedan from the 901 series. This compact car was produced by the Italian company Industria Napoletana Costruzioni Autoveicoli Alfa Romeo-Alfasud S.p.A.. The company was founded by the Italian government in 1969. The company was based in a poor area of southern Italy, and the launch of this production was a government mandate aimed at increasing employment in southern Italy. Despite a strong engineering base, the Alfa Romeo (especially the earlier models) suffered from rust. This was presumably due to the conditions in which the body parts were stored at the factory. From 1972 to 1983, about 900,000 cars were sold. It was one of the most successful Alfa Romeo models in its history.

Historical Review.

This model was designed by Austrian Rudolf Hruska and is a unique engineering kit with a bodywork by Giorgetto Giugiaro of Italdesign. The car was built at a new factory in Pomigliano d'Arco in southern Italy, "Sud" in the name of the car means south. Construction of the plant began in April 1968 with government investment on the site of a former aircraft engine factory that was used by Alfa Romeo during the war.


The Alfa Sud debuted at the Turin Motor Show in 1971, and its body design was immediately praised by journalists: the four-door sedan was equipped with a unique 1.2-liter boxed engine with liquid-cooled and belt drive. The characteristics of the model were unusual for its size, including the complex suspension for this class, in particular the presence of front and rear disk brakes. The engine design allowed the Alphard to have well-positioned hood lines, improved aerodynamics (best in class at the time), and a low center of gravity. Due to these design features, the car had excellent engine performance, as well as good traction and handling, which other manufacturers of this class could not achieve for almost a decade. Despite its orthodox design, the Alphard was not intended to be a hatchback. Headlights, lights, wipers, heater fan and steering wheel were activated by repeatedly pushing the lever near the steering wheel.


Since 1978, the car has been equipped with new engines of 1.35 liters (79 hp) and 1.49 liters (85 hp). First on the Sprint and Ti models, then on all models In 1980, all Alphasudo received plastic bumpers, new dashboards, headlights and taillights In late 1982, the four-door models were replaced by the five-door Alphasudo, which was replaced in 1983 by the Alfa Romeo 33, an improved version of the three-door version that was on sale for about a year.
