About This Mod
Proton Proton, IPA: [ɐˈ] (official name UR-500) is a reusable rocket system used for civil and state space launches. The first Proton launch vehicle was launched in 1965; as of 2022, the latest version of the system is still in use, making it one of the most successful heavy launch vehicles in the history of space travel. All Proton components are manufactured at the SCPP S.A. Khrunichev in Moscow and at the Chemistry Design Bureau in Voronezh are then transported to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, where at Site 91 they are assembled into a launch vehicle. Once the payload is installed, the missile is transported horizontally by rail to the launch pad and raised vertically for launch.
As with many Soviet missiles, the name of the payload became associated with the missile itself. The name "Proton" comes from a series of scientific satellites of the same name, which were one of the first payloads of the rocket. During the Cold War, Western intelligence agencies referred to it as D-1/D-1e or SL-12/SL-13.
The payload for low Earth orbit is approximately 22.8 tons (50,000 pounds). The geostationary orbit is about 6.3 tons (14,000 lbs). Commercial launches are carried out by International Launch Services (ILS).
In 2013, the launch vehicle was scheduled to be out of production by 2030.
As of June 2018, production of the Proton missiles has ceased due to the operation of the new Angara launch vehicle. It is likely that no new contracts will be awarded for the maintenance of launches for Proton.
