As you've guessed. Mimir told us that our runes had expired long ago, and Kratos admitted that he didn't care very well for his armor. I think that’s a good explanation, but it doesn’t explain why Kratos has completely forgotten all of his previous moves since 2018. Nor does it explain why it has become weaker and more fragile in just a few short years.

Unlike in 2018, when he was completely blinded by Baldur, Kratos has waited for the past three years with horror for the day when Thor will finally appear at his door. Kratos has had time to practice and should be much stronger than his God of War colleague.

To reflect this, my save file begins with Kratos at 7th level and full possession of two starting weapons. The idea is that despite losing all the mad magical perks he had at the end of God of War, Kratos trained hard and returned to his physical peak, able to effortlessly sweep past the main enemies. He also has more health and more rage. Also, I raised Rage to 3rd level.

However, high statuses help only a few at this difficulty. Enemies are relentless and still strike hard, so don't be careless. Stones offer very little healing compared to the damage you will take, so it's still worth exploring and collecting materials for more difficult battles in the future.
