Best Thunder - Simple Fix
About This Mod
The basic mechanism for randomly selecting a lightning bolt by placing files in subdirectories does not work. I believe that there is an advanced weather mode with a very simple vanilla side step, which makes the random choice of zipper work properly. I attached an image and an example of a .esp file showing how to do that.
In the basic vanilla game, all thunder sound files are placed in multiple subdirectories (Thunder and ThunderDistant), and these directories are specified for random thunder selection. This mechanism is inefficient (there are mods that try to fix Thunder, but I don't think any of them tries to work directly around the broken mechanism). ... Indeed, we have seen comments in the "Real Thunder Sounds" section (CrazyAce) that suggest that the problem still exists.
Just for the sake of interest I tried to install Thunder as a separate sound and call it directly in the Thunder list (see the picture attached to this fashion). This workaround can easily be used for many thunder sounds (e.g. the aforementioned "Real Thunder Sounds" thunder sound). Since I have all the games in the Elder Scrolls series, I also tried to use the sounds of Morrowind, and they work very well.
I also added a small .esp that uses vanilla thunder sound file and provides a simple example modified only for vanilla weather. Feel free to edit and use this file and workaround.
You can also add a specific sound file a few times and change settings, such as making the attenuation lower for near thunder and louder for far.
For a quick demo, use the console to force the following weather changes, with or without modifications
fw 38EF1 1 (Thunder of Tamrils)
fw 67198 1 (Electric Storm Oblivion)
This mode does not create new weather identifiers, so other weather modes using these vanilla weather identifiers must work normally.
