Realistic Physics of Cars


In this chapter, we’ll look at the key aspects of physics underlying the behavior of cars in our virtual environment. This includes simulation of wheel-to-surface interaction, aerodynamics, suspension operation, and the effect of inertia on handling.

 


We strive to recreate a sense of real driving, where every movement, acceleration, braking and turning feels natural and believable. You can achieve this by carefully adjusting the physical parameters that control the interaction of the car with the surrounding world.

 


Particular attention is paid to the detailed modeling of tires, as they are the link between the car and the road. Tire-to-asphalt adhesion under different conditions and clutch changes under different wheel angles and dynamic loads are considered.

 


The next step is to analyze the aerodynamic forces that affect the behavior of the car at high speeds. We calculate the air resistance force, the clamping force, which improves the grip, and their impact on the overall stability of the machine.

 


An important component is suspension modeling. It helps to damp down oscillations caused by driving on uneven roads, providing comfort and handling. The rigidity of springs, shock absorbers and suspension stroke are taken into account.

 


Finally, the effect of inertia that occurs during acceleration, braking, and cornering is considered. This is manifested in rolls, weight transfer and influence on the center of mass of the car.

 


It is the combination of these factors that creates a complex and realistic physical model that allows us to experience the real driving of a virtual car.
