About This Mod

First of all, you should know that this mod is more than just replacing existing sound files in the game with other ones. Rather, the ISC's goal is to greatly expand the functionality and scale of the Skyrim soundtrack. Vanilla sound design is in a rather deplorable state, and my reasonable guess is that it was largely hampered by what was developed primarily for outdated console hardware, and therefore sacrificed ambition in terms of sound to instead direct resources to other things, such as improving the visual component.

To remedy this situation, thousands of new individual sounds were created for the game. A huge amount of effort has been put into expanding the soundtrack of elements that I consider part of the core gameplay. You will not hear the same sound again when an NPC or creature dies and falls to the ground. Creatures such as wolves, dragres, etc., will no longer cycle 4 or so universal footsteps, regardless of the surface they move on. Movement now always reflects the type of armor you're wearing. By selecting items, you will more consistently play sounds that match the type of item you have stolen. A great sword strike, steamed with a one-handed ax, now reflects elements of the collision of both weapons, not just the general sound of parrying. Powerful high-level shock spells now send thunderous flashes over vast distances outdoors, but remain more limited when applied indoors. And so on and so forth.

The aim is to make all these small, disjointed elements a cohesive whole and to produce a more diverse, dynamic and reactive sound. Ultimately, it will also vastly improve the overall gameplay experience, as the world will simply have more adequate feedback for action. I'm sure when I say it's probably the biggest separate audio mod on Nexus in terms of the scale of what it does.

Another goal is to provide the user with an unprecedented number of options and easy customization. The included NMM and MO compatible installer offers a variety of options in several categories. Whether you prefer a stylized fantasy approach or something more realistic, or perhaps something in between, you can usually choose between different options. There are also a lot of small options usually aimed at disabling some aspects that you may find annoying, such as a critical hit notification or a windy sound that plays when you are incapacitated/pumped.
