About This Mod

Landing in Normandy (English). Normandy landings, fr. Débarquement de Normandie (Operation Neptune). Operation Neptune, fr. Opération Neptune) was a naval amphibious operation launched on 6 June 1944 in Normandy during World War II. The U.S., British, Canadian and allied forces [note 1] took part in the event, opposing the German occupation forces. The exercise was the first phase of Operation Overlord, a strategic effort to liberate northwestern France.

The Allied invasion of Normandy began on 6 June 1944 (D-Day) with the landing of over 150,000 troops on the Normandy coast. It consisted of two main stages. The first stage was marked by an airborne operation in which about 13,500 British, American, Canadian and French paratroopers were airlifted after midnight. The second stage included a naval landing operation, which began in the morning at 6:30, as well as a series of disinformation operations codenamed "Glimmer" and "Taxable", which were undertaken to mislead the Germans about the intended direction of the main attack.[3]

The landing took place on an 80 km stretch of coast between the mouth of the Orne River and the commune of Ozville. The area was divided into five main sectors for the invasion: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juneau, and Sward.

The process of invading the French coast was a mixed success for the Allied units. Most of the bridgeheads achieved significant results, and the landing troops, from the start of the landing, managed to seize the initiative and gain a foothold on the enemy shore. However, in the 8-kilometer-wide section of Omaha, the situation developed differently and got out of control. The Americans, faced with organized resistance from German troops, suffered heavy losses from the first minutes, almost losing the opportunity to turn the tide in their favor. General Omar Bradley, the commander of the U.S. First Army, even considered canceling further landings in the area and withdrawing troops. From the outset, the success of Operation Neptune was in jeopardy. Nevertheless, the paratroopers managed to break through the coastal defensive positions of the Germans and create separate pockets of resistance.

Overall, the German response to the landings on the entire Norman coast was indecisive and poorly organized. In addition, in the conditions of absolute dominance in the air of Allied aviation, as well as due to the sabotage actions of the Resistance and the detachments of British commandos, the Wehrmacht troops already at the stage of moving reserves to the defense lines suffered significant losses. As a result, the Germans were unable to make effective use of the opportunity to quickly drop troops into the sea.

By the end of D-Day, five infantry divisions, three airborne divisions, and a tank brigade had landed in the English and American sectors. They managed to capture a strip of the coast with a depth of 3 to 5 km, although not the entire length of the front. By 7 June, the bridgeheads had been completely cleared of the enemy. The Normandy landings have been recognized as the largest [4][5] amphibious operation in the history of the amphibious assault, involving the simultaneous landing of 156,000 troops from the sea[6], supported by 195,700 sailors[7] and involving about 5,000 combat and transport vessels of various types and types[6].
