About This Mod

This

mod refines the mechanics of armor, separating evasion and defense, thus providing light, medium and heavy armor with a more unique gameplay. Armor class now represents only the character's ability to evade attacks. However, each type of armor also receives a reduction in physical damage, which is both its defensive properties and its ability to withstand damage.

  • Light armor gives better AC, but almost no DR. Characters in light armor either evade the attack completely or suffer from it completely. A lot of weak attacks will eventually overwhelm them, but one or two really powerful attacks can be avoided altogether. Such a high-risk, high-reward strategy encourages you to have a high dexterity score and carefully manage the advantages/disadvantages of enemies when attacking against you, preferably that you are not the target at all. However, the light armor is superior to those who use magic, as it is easier to evade a spell when you are not prevented from moving.
  • Heavy armor provides greater resistance to physical damage, but its low armor class makes it easier to hit, but harder to damage. Dexterity now affects Heavy Armor AC to +1, but in most cases it doesn't matter. Heavy-armor characters can easily fight a crowd of weaker enemies, withstand their attacks and do not take much care of the advantages and disadvantages against them. Their defenses are stable, though imperfect, and they are likely to lose some health points in each fight, aided by high body stature with little need for agility. However, magical attacks are a more difficult task, as their damage is not reduced by armor.
  • The average armor is a safe middle ground. Decent armor class and reduced physical damage, but nothing exceptional. Good dexterity and build scores are recommended for characters with medium armor. The average AC armor is affected by Dexterity up to +3.
  • Unarmoured Combat remained unchanged, as its current implementation follows the logic of Armor Overhaul as it is.

Other changes:

  • Acid. Instead of reducing your armor class, it now makes you vulnerable to penetrating, crushing, and slashing damage. A strong counterstrike on armor's defensive properties and generally a more dangerous effect.
  • Beautiful. Its former effect would have been extremely powerful with the new armor mechanics, eliminating almost all the alternative costs of heavy armor. It also makes less sense when the armor class is only an evasion of attacks. Thus, the effect was completely reworked. Barkskin now gives a +2 reduction in physical damage if the character does not wear a medium or heavy body armor, making light armor a preferred option for druids.
  • Dragon fortitude. For the same narrative reasons it has turned into +2 to reduce physical damage until you are wearing armor. Does not add up with Barkskin card.
  • Medium Armor Master now gives you a +1 reduction in physical damage while wearing medium armor, rather than an additional bonus to attack power.
  • The Heavy Armor Master no longer provides additional power and +2 to reduce physical damage instead of +3, which, however, now affects magical weapons.
  • Defensive Combat Style now reduces physical damage by 1 while wearing armor instead of 1.
  • Agility Fighting Style is a new fighting style that serves as the previous Defense feature. Gives 1 AC if you are not wearing heavy armor. Finally a useful fighting style for monks of different classes. Available to Sword College fighters, rangers and bards.
