Unlike many of the weapons used in the Army, the L4 was not a specially designed weapon, but a modification of earlier designs. Specifically, the L4A3 (later A4) was a Bren Mk2 modified to a 7.62 mm NATO cartridge, and the A2/A4 was identical but based on the Mk3. The mechanical origins of the L4 are linked to a World War II project, in which the LMG Bren was converted to a 7mm Mauser by the Canadian company Inglis and secretly supplied to Chinese resistance forces against the Japanese occupation. However, unlike the Inglis variant, the L4 shutter was specifically manufactured with a more powerful extractor. With the introduction of the L1A1 SLR as the primary infantry rifle, the L4 became interchangeable with other units to simplify logistics and was powered essentially by a 30-charge magazine-sized FAL inch model. For this purpose, the walls of the store well have been hollowed out in the shorter and wider stores, and an additional unit containing a new body and a store latch stand has been inserted. As a result, on all later models, the shelf and store walls were reinforced with a plate riveted to the outside. The last major change to bring the basic specification to perfection was the replacement of a tapered stainless steel flame arrester with a five-port muzzle brake, similar to the SLR muzzle brake, as well as a new stock and carry handle. This was a general specification for L4, and applied almost equally to both Brens Mk 2 and Brens 3. The response to the L4, when it finally entered service, was generally favorable. Although the L4 was heavier than the shoulder gun and had a lower rate of magazine firing than the ribbon-fed LMG, its precision and handling made the Bren popular in the military for years to come. However, its popularity was short-lived: the L4 was always seen as a temporary solution until something better appeared; by the late 1980s, the Bren had been completely replaced by L7, L108 and L110 machine guns, with the latter having been retired in early 1992.
